Alexander Devine Children's Hospice Service was founded in 2007 with the aim of providing a hospice service for all children with life limiting illnesses in Berkshire. (Life limiting illnesses are medical conditions which mean the child is unlikely to reach adulthood). The charity is working to build and run 'Alexander Devine Children's Hospice' so that at last Berkshire families have access to a local children's hospice.
The Charity was set up by Fiona and John Devine in memory of their son Alexander, who was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor aged just four. 'You imagine that when your child becomes very seriously ill an all-encompassing package of support will be given to your family. This simply does not happen. There is no dedicated support for children with life-limiting conditions in Berkshire and we want to change that.' says Alexander's mummy and co-founder of the Alexander Devine Children's Hospice Service.
In October 2009 we funded Lucy as our first Alexander's Nurse who works as part of the Community Nursing Team at Wexham Park NHS Trust. She goes into the homes of local families in East Berkshire to provide respite for children and their carers. It is often this kind of support that a family so desperately needs as looking after a sick child 24 hours a day can be extremely tiring and the stress can feel overwhelming. In the 2 years she has been in post Alexander's Nurse has been in contact with 30 local families, has provided regular respite and care for 20 families and has supported five families with end-of-life care for their child. The overwhelming benefit of this role is that now these families have one person they can turn to at any time and total support in the last days and weeks of their child's life.
Immediately we could see the enormous difference that Alexander's Nurse was making to the precious lives of local life-limited children and we knew that we needed to grow this unique service. In June 2011 we appointed a second Alexander's Nurse who works as part of the Community Team at the Royal Berkshire NHS Trust and she is now focused on taking care of children across West Berkshire.
